PM Modi is reviewing Chief Ministers’ performance and may act decisively to boost efficiency, following Haryana’s win and prior election directives.
New Delhi: A significant change is expected within the NDA government and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organisation following the elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand.
According to sources, the announcement of the new president’s name is expected immediately after these elections, with the completion of organizational election formalities. Prime Minister Modi may also reorganize his team, possibly introducing new faces. Some current ministers might transition from government roles to organizational positions, and there is speculation that chief ministers in one or two states could be replaced.
The performance of Chief Ministers is currently under review. In a July meeting with BJP Chief Ministers, Prime Minister Modi issued strict instructions, especially after the party won fewer than expected seats in the Lok Sabha elections. Although these were only directives at that time, action may now follow. The BJP’s recent victory in Haryana has bolstered confidence within the party, giving Prime Minister Modi the impetus to take decisive steps aimed at enhancing the efficiency of both the government and the organisation.
With the Haryana win, the NDA under Modi’s leadership has gained further strength. Before these elections, Congress strategists were intensively preparing, seeing the NDA as vulnerable and anticipating possible fractures within the alliance. However, following their defeat, the opposition is now on a weaker footing, with unity within the All I.N.D.I. Alliance appearing uncertain. If the BJP secures victories in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, Congress may find itself on the defensive in the winter session starting next month.
The opposition is hopeful of halting the NDA’s momentum in the Maharashtra elections, but experts suggest that Maharashtra might follow a similar path to Haryana. Similar to Haryana, leaders of the MVA seem confident of victory, and the BJP is already capitalising on this confidence. Congress has taken a cautious stance in Maharashtra, and while it won the most seats in the Lok Sabha elections, it did not oppose the equal distribution of seats among the three parties. However, issues persist over the remaining seats.
BJP strategists are determined to replicate their success in Maharashtra, with full support from the Sangh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will soon begin extensive campaigning, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah is actively overseeing the elections.
Just as in Haryana, meticulous planning is underway for each seat. Additionally, the BJP’s alliance appears robust in Jharkhand. If the BJP secures victories in Maharashtra and Jharkhand after Haryana, significant changes within the NDA government and the party organization are likely.
The party will prioritise selecting a new national president. Sources reveal that a consensus has been reached between Prime Minister Modi and Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat on the choice of the new president. After the assembly elections, the name of the new president will be announced by December, with the BJP’s organizational election process set to be completed by November 30.
Once the new president is chosen, organisational changes are anticipated, with a high probability of reshuffles within the Union Cabinet.
Additionally, decisions regarding the fate of one or two state Chief Ministers will be made. These decisions will address complaints about the performance of certain Chief Ministers and their inability to meet their responsibilities.
