NewsDelhi traffic police braces for New Year’s Eve and fog-prone season

The traffic police have organized the deployment of 2,500 traffic personnel and 400 motorcycle riders, ensuring comprehensive arrangements.

Ahead of the new year celebration and in preparation for the upcoming fog season, the traffic police have organized the deployment of 2,500 traffic personnel and 400 motorcycle riders, ensuring comprehensive arrangements. For the new year festivities, vehicle access to Connaught Place›s inner, middle, and outer circles is restricted, permitting only vehicles with valid passes. To accommodate visitors, ample parking is accessible near Connaught Place, specifically designated areas like Gole Dak Khana, Patel Chowk, Mandi House, and other specified locations, available on a first-come, first-served basis as specified by officials.

Special Commissioner of. Police.(Traffic), S.S. Yadav, said in a press conference that strict action will be taken against violations, including drunken driving, over speeding and reckless driving. Special checkpoints and surveillance cameras will be deployed across the city. Visitors planning to celebrate at India Gate are encouraged to use public transport due to the limited parking space. Special traffic diversions and checks will be implemented in the vicinity of India Gate. In anticipation of heavy traffic around popular celebration spots like Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj, Hauz Khas Village, and Aerocity, commuters are advised to plan their travel accordingly, added Yadav.

On December 31, the traffic police will conduct special checks and enforce strict measures against offenses like drunken driving, overspeeding, stunt biking, reckless and zig-zag driving. Detective cameras have been strategically placed to identify and prosecute violators. A city-wide initiative will be implemented, deploying staff equipped with breathalyzers at various junctions. Stringent action will be taken against stunt bikers and speeding vehicles. Authorities emphasize the public to avoid drinking and driving, suggesting they arrange for a sober driver post-celebrations. This caution follows last year›s tragic incident in Kanjhewala, where an intoxicated group caused a fatal accident resulting in the brutal murder of a girl. The police will conduct thorough patrols, even in low-traffic areas, as a precautionary measure.

The traffic police have also issued an advisory regarding the winter fog and low visibility. Delhi is on high alert with a «Red Alert» from the Indian Meteorological Department›s forecast of dense to very dense fog in the coming week, and due to this, the city may experience visibility as low as 50 meters. In light of this, road users are urged to take precautions, including knowing their route, maintaining vehicle condition, using defrosters, and keeping windows clean. Additional advice includes using low-beam headlights, maintaining safe distances, and avoiding distractions while driving. In extremely dense fog, turning on hazard lights and pulling over to a safe location is recommended to prevent accidents, said traffic police.
