VHP spokesperson Vinod Bansal calls Maha Kumbh a spiritual journey, uniting Hindus world wide every 12 years for enlightenment.
New Delhi: The Hindu-right wing organisation Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) is urging people across the country, regardless of religion, race, caste, or social background, to attend the upcoming Maha Kumbh Mela and take a holy dip at the Sangam. The event is scheduled to take place from January 13 next year. Families are encouraged to bring their children to foster values of culture, religion, and humanity, they said.
The Maha Kumbh Mela offers a unique opportunity for individuals to immerse themselves in spirituality, unity, and the pursuit of liberation, promising to be a transformative experience for all attendees, according to the VHP.
Speaking to The Sunday Guardian, VHP National Spokesperson Vinod Bansal highlighted the significance of the Kumbh Mela in Hinduism. He explained that while the event is held every three years, the Maha Kumbh occurs every 12 years and is eagerly anticipated by Hindus and those connected to Hindu culture worldwide. The event is considered a spiritual journey, offering participants a chance to meditate, chant, and worship, as described in the scriptures. It is seen as a path to enlightenment and liberation, embodying the essence of spirituality and cultural unity.
Bansal emphasised that the Kumbh Mela acts as a unifying force, bringing together people from various religious communities, castes, languages, cultures, and beliefs. Without formal invitations or material motivations, individuals gather in complete surrender at this sacred event. “This unique congregation promotes global unity while offering participants a chance to experience India’s rich cultural heritage, traditions, and spiritual values. Transcending religious and ideological boundaries, the Kumbh Mela welcomes anyone in search of spiritual growth. Attendees witness a harmonious blend of diverse spiritual practices, traditions, and religious communities coming together with a shared purpose. It stands as a remarkable example of global unity and the celebration of diversity, uniting people in their journey toward self-discovery and spirituality,” said Bansal.
Bansal further explained that the Kumbh Mela is not a man-made event but an astronomical occurrence determined by the movements of the Earth, Moon, Sun, and stars. Indian astrologers have carefully calculated the dates for this auspicious gathering, preserving a time-honored tradition. Despite interruptions during colonial rule, the legacy of the Kumbh Mela continues to thrive, showcasing its enduring significance.
Bansal highlighted that the Kumbh Mela has grown to attract participants from all backgrounds, including non-Hindus, who seek mental and spiritual peace. The event transcends distinctions of religion, caste, and culture, offering attendees an opportunity to reconnect with their inner selves. It exemplifies the simplicity of life, as participants rely on basic facilities and focus on spiritual growth rather than material comforts.
Bansal noted that historically, even without significant government support, people would walk for days, enduring hardships, to attend the Kumbh. The event’s spiritual essence and unwavering faith have always been its greatest strengths. For instance, during the 2008 gathering at the Triveni Sangam, a storm destroyed pandals and tents, yet attendees remained steadfast in their devotion and continued to participate wholeheartedly.
The VHP spokesperson emphasised that the Kumbh Mela is a sanctuary for those disillusioned by materialism, offering peace and meaning through spirituality.
Observing the dedication of Naga sadhus and other spiritual leaders inspires attendees to reflect on their own lives and values. It also serves as a hub of true knowledge and provides a temporary escape from worldly struggles.
Bansal points out that this year’s Kumbh, organised on a grand scale under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath, holds special significance. The VHP urges everyone to attend this Maha Kumbh, which occurs once every 144 years, making it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
