A world addicted to taste, and sweet is king. A rush of desire, and the high of material possessions – all taste like sweet molasses. Lost in a dream, a realisation is missed:
Life is diminishing, but he does not understand.
Each day, the mouse of death is gnawing at the rope of life.
Illusion spreads like sweet molasses; the selfish human is stuck like a fly, rotting away.
The sweet taste is actually that of poison. By His grace, a chance meeting with a true Teacher, and now the reality behind the sweetness starts to unravel. The wanton pursuit of all that glitters shows itself for what it really is – the fly will die in its love for sweets, flapping helplessly, its wings stuck to the very molasses it came for. With awareness, sweetness is now found in the teachings of the Guru:
Even if the Guru rebukes me, He still seems very sweet to me.
And if He forgives me, that is the Guru’s greatness.
Guided by an adept master, the journey of self-discovery removes all fear, and addiction to false sweetness of material possessions, and to the negativity of lies, deceit and jealousy. In a state of calm, the devotee now exclaims:
Tasted it, I have tasted the sweet essence of the Lord!
By the pleasure of the Guru, I have attained peaceful ease.
With peace and ease, the flow of the universe becomes natural, and just right. There is now sweetness in everything:
The stubbornness of my mind is gone;
God’s will has now become sweet to me.
The taste of sweetness has now transitioned from false and temporary, to truth and everlasting. The whole world wants to solve this mystery. “Tell us of this new sweetness”, it asks. The answer is stunning:
The Lord’s quality cannot be spoken out.
A mute enjoys the sweet taste of candy, but can he explain its taste?
