New Delhi: The Supreme Court has reserved its judgment in the case concerning illegal Bangladeshi immigrants detained in West Bengal jails.

The top court questioned the state government over handling these detainees.

The bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan questioned why these detainees, who have already been convicted under Foreigners Act 1946, are kept in regular jails rather than in a detention center.

The bench also asked whether the West Bengal government lacked the resources to establish detention centres for them.

Bench asked the Centre and the West Bengal government to explain the delay in deporting these illegal immigrants.

Earlier, the Calcutta HC had taken a suo-motu action and later it was transferred to the Supreme Court.

During the proceedings, the court questioned the delay in deporting these detainees to Bangladesh, despite them already being convicted under the Foreigners Act of 1946.
