New Delhi: The national capital has recently witnessed intense political debates, with different parties blaming each other for an alleged breakdown of law and order in Delhi. However, official data from the Delhi Police challenges this narrative, showing a decline in crimes against women. Such allegations, often amplified during election periods, appear to be designed to sway public opinion and divert voters’ focus from more pressing or relevant issues.
Earlier, AAP national convener and former Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, criticised the BJP-led central government for failing to address Delhi’s “worsening” law and order situation, citing daylight shootings and rising extortion threats.
The data reveals a 10.36% drop in rape cases, from 2,141 in 2023 to 1,919 in 2024. Cases of molestation decreased by 19.10%, from 2,345 to 1,897, while incidents of eve-teasing fell by 9.97%, from 381 to 343. Most notably, human trafficking cases saw a dramatic 42.37% decline, from 59 in 2023 to just 34 this year.
Special Commissioner of Police (Training), Chhaya Sharma, highlighted the multi-faceted approach behind these achievements.
“Ensuring the safety and empowerment of women requires leveraging advanced technologies like AI-powered surveillance, fostering community awareness through self-defence workshops and campaigns, and establishing victim-centric support systems such as women’s help desks,” Sharma said.
She emphasised that the mission is not only to prevent crimes but also to instil confidence in women that the system is responsive and inclusive.
Sharma detailed several initiatives by the Delhi Police, including increased patrolling in areas deemed unsafe for women, the introduction of women-focused programs like Pink Booths, the ‘Himmat’ mobile app, and the ‘Nirbheek Scheme,’ which educates girls in schools and colleges about sexual crimes.
Additionally, the Delhi Police has linked the helpline number 1096 to police control rooms to ensure swift action against crimes such as stalking, domestic violence, sexual abuse, and kidnapping.
Sharma also praised the role of technology in reducing crime rates. AI-enabled cameras installed in public spaces help track suspects in real-time, while AI tools analyse crime data to identify high-risk areas, enabling better resource deployment and enhanced vigilance. This combination of technological innovation and proactive policing has played a crucial role in improving safety for women in Delhi.
