BJP aims to repeat its stellar performance in the West Bengal Assembly elections in 2026.
Kolkata: News of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s overwhelming victory and the decimation of the Aam Aadmi Party in the Delhi elections has sparked a wave of excitement 1,500 km away in Bengal.
As the Bengal unit of the BJP erupted in exultation, firing off tweet after tweet, the Trinamool Congress – which had supported Arvind Kejriwal’s party and even sent its MP Shatrughan Sinha to campaign for AAP in Delhi – struggled to distance itself from the debacle of both its I.N.D.I.A bloc partners – AAP and Congress.
The common refrain of Bengal BJP leaders on their X handle and among its members was: “Delhi got rid of AAP, now is the turn of Bengal’s PAAP,” referring to the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress.
Trinamool Congress spokespersons and leaders claimed that Kejriwal had fallen victim to the BJP’s machinations, which had exploited the unique political setup of Delhi to win voters.
Senior leader Firhad Hakim said that the BJP had succeeded in “fooling” the people of Delhi with its Union Budget.
“The elections were cleverly scheduled just after the presentation of the Union Budget, and the BJP managed to fool the people of Delhi with its claims of looking after the middle class.”
Bengal BJP leaders lauded the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, crediting them with the victory which would usher in “double-engine sarkar” in Delhi after a long wait of 27 years.
BJP’s Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, said, “This is a victory over the frauds and cheats – both the AAP and Trinamool Congress – who were working hand in hand. This is a defeat of not only AAP but also the Trinamool Congress. This victory shows the love of the people for our charismatic and hardworking Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
“The party had entrusted me with the responsibility of consolidating our Bengali and Purvanchali brothers into the BJP fold. In Najafgarh, Gonda, Greater Kailash, and CR Park, we have received massive support from the pravasi Bengali voters,” he said.
He added that Sanatanis, Punjabis, and Purvanchalis had voted en masse in favour of his party and said that Bengal would also see a similar result if all the Hindu Sanatanis came out to vote for the BJP in the 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal.
He also made it clear that the BJP was confident about its prospects in Bihar and Assam, and West Bengal would firmly remain in its crosshairs.
“Delhi ki jeet hamari hai, chabbis mein Bengal ki baari hai,” he signed off.
Sukanta Majumdar, State BJP chief and Union Minister, said, “People in Delhi have managed to see through the dubious claims of Kejriwal. Bengal will also tread the same path in the next elections.”
Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh brushed off the Bengal BJP’s euphoria and said, “We are not concerned with what happens elsewhere. Delhi is Delhi. In West Bengal, in 2026, TMC will win 250+ seats (out of 294) and Mamata Banerjee will become the Chief Minister for the fourth time.”
