New Delhi: Six people lost their lives, and several others are feared trapped after a wall collapsed at a private company’s construction site in Gujarat’s Mehsana district on Saturday. Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities race to save those still under the debris.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and announced financial assistance for the victims. “The accident caused by the wall collapse in Mehsana, Gujarat, is extremely sad. My deepest condolences to those who lost their loved ones,” the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “I wish for the speedy recovery of the injured, and under the supervision of the state government, the local administration is providing all possible help.”
An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) has been declared for the families of each deceased, along with Rs 50,000 for the injured.
According to Hasrat Jasmine, the District Development Officer (DDO) of Mehsana, the incident occurred around 1:45 pm at the under-construction site. “As per initial information, 9-10 workers were trapped. So far, six bodies have been recovered,” Jasmine said.
The DDO further reported that a 19-year-old boy was rescued alive, and based on his statement, 2-3 people may still be trapped under the debris. “We pray to God that they are rescued safely,” Jasmine added.
Local authorities are leading the rescue efforts to ensure no further loss of life.
