MCD launches probe into use of civic school premises for Ramlila

NewsMCD launches probe into use of civic school premises for Ramlila

NEW DELHI

Even as the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter and sent a notice to the agencies concerned for organising a Ramlila event on the premises of a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) school, Delhi Mayor Dr Shelly Oberoi has allegedly remained silent on the use of MCD schools for Ramlila and another public gatherings.

A notice has been sent to the agency concerned for organising a 10-day Ramlila event at the MCD Pratibha Vidyalaya (co-ed) school, located at Nangli Razapur, near Sarai Kale Khan. The notice also states that the school premises are being used for illegal car parking by nearby residents.

A local resident confirmed the allegations of the DCPCR. He said, “For a few years, functions like Ramlila and other local events were organised inside the school grounds, and because of that, sometimes students have to face hazardous situations. So, it is necessary to take strict action against it.”

The DCPCR has raised concerns about the possible infringement on child rights and safety. The notification further reads: “The commission is firmly dedicated to safeguarding the protection and welfare of children, and any action that jeopardises their safety, well-being, or rights is a subject of severe concern.

Unauthorised use of school grounds for public gatherings and illegal parking raises major concerns about the possibility for child rights to be violated because it could expose kids to uncontrollable situations and jeopardise their right to a secure environment.” DCPCR member Ranjana Prasad said that the commission has asked the respective DCP, southeast Delhi, and district magistrate for immediate action. She said, “We have asked for an investigation into the unauthorised use of the school’s grounds. We have also urged the authorities to ensure that the school property is restored for its intended educational purpose and immediate measures taken to prevent any unauthorised usage.” However, Amit Kumar, Director of Press and Information at MCD, said, “We are looking into the matter and investigating the proof, and if we find the allegations to be true, then we’ll address the concern and take action.” The Sunday Guardian contacted Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi but she chose to remain silent on the matter.
