New Delhi: On Monday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that the upcoming ‘Zero Poverty’ Mission in the state will be named after Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. Slated to launch later this month, the mission aims to uplift every underprivileged and marginalized citizen above the poverty line.
Addressing a gathering organized by the Ambedkar Mahasabha on Dr. Ambedkar’s 134th birth anniversary, the CM said the mission aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of inclusive development. “No poor individual should be deprived of basic amenities or access to welfare schemes,” he emphasized, also releasing a commemorative souvenir on the occasion.
The Chief Minister highlighted the government’s focused efforts over the past eight years to bring benefits to communities such as the Musahar, Tharu, Vantangiya, Kol, Buksa, Chero, Gond, and Sahariya. “Every eligible individual has been connected to schemes aimed at improving their living standards,” he said.
In the first phase, the mission will identify 14–15 lakh families across Uttar Pradesh. Each Gram Panchayat will shortlist 20–25 families who haven’t fully benefitted from government schemes. The initiative will be supported by both state and central governments.
Naming the mission after Dr. Ambedkar is a tribute to his philosophy of social, educational, and economic empowerment, the CM said. “Uttar Pradesh will be the first state to take a concrete step toward eradicating poverty.” Reflecting on Dr. Ambedkar’s life, he recalled how, despite numerous struggles, Ambedkar’s determination and intellect led him to pursue higher education in England with the support of the Maharaja of Baroda. Upon returning to India, Ambedkar dedicated himself to securing justice and dignity for millions of marginalized citizens, becoming a champion for Dalits and a key figure in India’s freedom struggle.
Yogi Adityanath recounted Dr. Ambedkar’s pivotal role in the formation of the Indian Constitution as the Chairman of the Drafting Committee and the country’s first Law Minister. “The Constitution today unites 140 crore Indians across every region,” he said, asserting that the strength of modern India is rooted in Ambedkar’s vision. He praised the leadership of PM Modi for advancing this vision, particularly in the fields of education, economic empowerment, and social inclusion. “Even during the global COVID-19 crisis, India was the only nation to ensure every citizen received essential welfare,” he stated.
The CM recalled his first visit to the Ambedkar Mahasabha in 2017 and shared how he had assured then-president Nirmal Ji of his commitment. On that occasion, he had announced land rights and housing for the poor. Since then, over one crore families have received legal land ownership through the PM Swamitva Yojana, and 56 lakh families have been provided housing under various schemes.
He also mentioned the CM Yuva Udyami Abhiyan — an initiative offering interest-free, collateral-free loans to youth from SC, ST, and EBC communities to promote entrepreneurship. Over 30,000 youth have already benefited, with plans to support one lakh aspiring entrepreneurs annually. Further, Gram Panchayat committees managing community toilets will now receive a monthly honorarium to maintain cleanliness and uphold the dignity of sanitation workers.
The CM stressed the importance of learning from history, reflecting on the contributions of Dr. Ambedkar and Jogendra Nath Mandal. “While Baba Saheb is celebrated, Mandal’s legacy has faded. We must remember that national unity is vital, and we cannot allow divisive forces to weaken us,” he warned. He also cited the contrasting situations in Pakistan and Bangladesh, emphasizing India’s role as a beacon of humanity under PM Modi’s leadership — whether through developing Ambedkar’s Panch Teerths or offering refuge to persecuted minorities from neighboring countries.
Criticizing the Congress and Samajwadi Party, the CM accused them of disrespecting Ambedkar’s legacy. “They insulted him in life and suppressed his ideals after death. Congress even blocked his memorial in Delhi, and SP opposed its construction,” he said. “Today, however, the entire nation honors Baba Saheb.” Urging citizens to follow Ambedkar’s message — “Be educated, because only education can prevent you from being misled” — the CM called on everyone to actively participate in welfare programs, educate their children, and work together to uplift the marginalized. “True economic empowerment begins with education,” he concluded. “Walking the path shown by Baba Saheb will help secure a better future. Our real tribute to him lies in standing united against injustice, corruption, and oppression.”
