MCD makes geo-tagging must for property tax exemption

NewsMCD makes geo-tagging must for property tax exemption

The onus is on the taxpayers to ensure that their properties are geo-tagged.

NEW DELHI

Delhiites are now required to geo-tag their property if they want a rebate in property tax exemption. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has made it compulsory for every citizen of the national capital to geo-tag their property. Last week, the MCD made an appeal to all property owners to complete the process of geo-tagging as soon as possible and contribute to the development of Delhi. MCD has also launched a mobile app for geo-tagging all residential and non-residential properties.

An official from MCD said that this rule was applicable to all kinds of properties. “MCD has made geo-tagging of all kinds of properties mandatory to avail of the property tax exemption. If taxpayers fail to geo-tag their properties by 31 January 2024, they shall not be able to avail the 10% rebate on lump sum advance payments of tax in the next financial year (i.e., 2024-25) due on 30 June 2024,” the official said.
The official added that MCD officers were themselves doing the geo-tagging in several cases of non-residential properties. However, the onus is on the taxpayers to ensure that their properties are geo-tagged. If a property has already been geo-tagged by MCD officers, there is no need to further geo-tag it.

Geo-tagging of properties will help in providing a unique latitude and longitude to a property on a GIS (Geographic Information System) map. This can be done by selecting the current location against a UPIC (Unique Property Identification Code). Citizens of the national capital can geo-tag their property using the MCD app or the civic body’s online portal, which enables the owners to do so. Geo-tagging will provide location-wise identification of individual properties which will further enable better delivery of civic service.

The MCD has also made it clear to all those property owners who are not registered with the MCD property tax portal that they must get their properties registered, generate UPIC, and geo-tag their properties. In case of failure to register their properties by 31 January 2024, MCD will proceed to recover tax and also lodge prosecution charges against the defaulters.
