Over 10,000 security personnel to ensure safety of Delhi on Independence Day

NewsOver 10,000 security personnel to ensure safety of Delhi on Independence Day

NEW DELHI: For the 78th Independence Day, Delhi Police enhanced security measures with more 700 CCTVs, over 10,000+ personnel, and video analytics. The AI-powered surveillance system will include vehicle number plate recognition, facial detection.

As the nation prepares to celebrate its 78th Independence Day on August 15, the Delhi Police have significantly ramped up security measures across the national capital. With security agencies, including the Delhi Police, nearing full implementation of these measures, the focus is on ensuring the safety of citizens during this grand occasion. More than 700 CCTVs and over 150 cameras equipped with video analytics will be deployed.

Additionally, over 10,000 security personnel, comprising Delhi Police officers and paramilitary forces, will be stationed at the Red Fort and other key locations in central and north Delhi.

In addition, security agencies will deploy artificial intelligence-based systems with advanced surveillance and automated crowd estimation capabilities around the Red Fort for the upcoming Independence Day. Sources indicate that CCTVs with video analytics will be positioned at key locations within the venue. The AI-powered surveillance system will include features such as vehicle number plate recognition, facial detection, people counting, tripwire alerts, audio detection, intrusion alerts, defocus detection, and monitoring for abandoned or missing objects. An official noted that AI-enhanced cameras will be used to track and count the flow of people entering and exiting the premises. The cameras will also be equipped to detect abandoned baggage in public areas and provide intrusion detection for high-risk zones. Different alarms can be configured based on the priority and sensitivity of each area. The advanced facial recognition system (FRS) will identify faces in real-time as well as from recorded footage. It will match faces against a “Watch List” database and send alerts to the control room. The system can detect multiple faces in group images, search for similar faces from single or multiple cameras, and allow searches by name, similar faces, or even unknown faces using a single image or group photo. A senior government official also highlighted that while a facial recognition system has been in use for several years, this year will see the addition of number plate recognition (NPR). This system will detect vehicle license plates through continuous real-time video processing, capturing and recording images of each vehicle, including any violations. It will integrate with multiple cameras and sensors to capture driver images.

Earlier, the Additional Director General of Police (Technical Support Service) convened a meeting with senior police officials, including the Police Commissioner, Additional Police Commissioners, and Assistant Commissioners, as well as gazetted officers and SHOs, to oversee and monitor all incidents.

In addition, the Delhi Police have intensified their efforts to combat the illegal sale of Chinese manjha in the capital ahead of Independence Day. Police have conducted multiple raids, leading to numerous arrests and the seizure of a large quantity of Chinese manjha.
Furthermore, security measures have been significantly enhanced. Posters featuring various terrorists associated with Al Qaeda and Khalistan have been distributed throughout the city. The police are urging the public to help in locating these individuals, offering rewards for information while ensuring the confidentiality of informants’ identities.

Earlier this week, the Delhi Police conducted an interstate coordination meeting, involving law enforcement agencies from neighbouring states and central agencies. The meeting focused on sharing intelligence about potential terror threats and implementing anti-terror measures, including border checks and the verification of suspicious individuals.

The discussion also addressed the problem of interstate gangs operating in the National Capital Region (NCR), as well as the trafficking of illegal firearms and narcotics. Plans were made for traffic restrictions during the Independence Day celebrations and measures to prevent unauthorised border intrusions, with a call for cooperation from officers in other states to ensure effective implementation.
