The story of Samuel is a remarkable example of spiritual growth, resilience, and divine favour. As a young boy, Samuel was dedicated to the Lord by his mother, Hannah, and raised in the house of God under the priest Eli. Despite growing up in an environment tainted by corruption—where Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, abused their priestly roles—Samuel remained steadfast in his devotion to God. His unwavering faith and obedience allowed him to grow in favour with both God and people, as stated in 1 Samuel 2:26.
Samuel’s life parallels the growth of Jesus, who also increased in wisdom, stature, and favour with God and people (Luke 2:52). Both figures exemplify the essential journey of a believer: deepening their relationship with God while also earning the respect and trust of others through righteous living.
Growing in favour with God requires a life of obedience, prayer, and faithfulness. Samuel cultivated a close relationship with God by listening attentively to His voice and following His will. His purity and commitment to righteousness set him apart, proving that one can thrive spiritually even in challenging environments. Today, believers can follow Samuel’s example by dedicating time to prayer, immersing themselves in Scripture, and pursuing holiness in their daily lives.
Growing in favour with people is essential. Samuel gained respect through integrity, humility, and service, not seeking recognition. His devotion led to recognition as a trusted prophet and leader. Likewise, we gain favour by by practicing honesty, treating others with kindness, and serving selflessly.
