Share your feelings, don’t bottle them up- PM Modi talks mental health at Pariksha Pe Charcha

TSG On WeekdaysShare your feelings, don’t bottle them up- PM Modi talks mental health at Pariksha Pe Charcha

New Delhi: In a welcome twist to the annual series of Pariksha Pe Charcha (PPC), the eight since its inception when it was started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2018 ,the PM engaged with students in the scenic outdoor setting of ‘Sunder nursery’ in New Delhi on Monday, breaking away from the usual indoor environment.

A visibly happy PM, in his characteristic style, engaged students with invaluable insights on a variety of topics

With over 3.5 crore students, teachers, and parents registering for the event, PPC 2025 saw a record-breaking turnout, making it the highest participation since its inception.

Pertinent to mention that the Central Board of Secondary Education will conduct class 10 exams between 15 February and 18 March while class 12 exams will take place from 15 February 15 to 4 April

Students from all over the country tuned in to this annual event, where they not only sought academic advice but also explored a range of life lessons shared by the Prime Minister himself.

One of the highlights was his discussion on nutrition. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of eating the right food at the right time, noting that the absence of illness does not equate to wellness. He shared his personal belief in the daily practice of Suryasnan (sunbath) for overall well-being. At the event, the PM gifted Til Laddoos to the students as a token of good health.

The PM further advised that students should not get bogged down by the pressure of exams but instead focus on learning, growth, and personal development.

Ever since this interaction was started eight years ago, PM Modi has been pushing the idea to students and their parents that exams are not the end but a beginning.

The PM also took a moment to reflect on his own career choices, revealing that if he hadn’t entered politics, he would have liked to work in the Skill Development Ministry. His passion for skill-building and lifelong learning was evident as he spoke about its transformative power in shaping individuals and, in turn, the future of the nation.

This segment of the discussion was closely followed by a masterclass on time management, where PM Modi provided practical tips on how he effectively manages his day, encouraging students to focus on the present moment and stay organized by setting tasks and ticking them off once completed.

A particularly heartwarming segment of the discussion centered around mental health and the pressures of exams. PM Modi used the analogy of a pressure cooker to explain how students often feel the weight of their emotions and how important it is to share those feelings with loved ones to relieve that pressure. He advised the students to not bottle up their feelings but to open up to their friends and families, as this would help in dealing with the accumulated stress.

Drawing from the example of spending time with a beloved dog, the PM said that just as one wouldn’t stop spending time with their pet due to a busy schedule, students should not abandon their hobbies during exams. Engaging in activities that bring joy can actually help students recharge, stay focused, and perform better.

This advice is particularly relevant in light of a 2018 study by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), which found that 13% of students experience anxiety during exams. The highest levels of anxiety were observed in 12th-grade students, reflecting the intense academic pressures faced by students in critical years. Many educational psychologists also point to fear of failure as a core contributor to such anxiety, which can lead to heightened stress levels and, in extreme cases, suicides.

On the topic of leadership PM Modi shared his belief that leaders do not demand respect; they command it. He emphasized the importance of leading by example and helping others, especially the weak. The Prime Minister also underlined the importance of teamwork, patience, and integrity. In a world that often demands instant results, the PM highlighted the fact that true leadership is rooted in behavior and trust, not in imposing authority.

The Prime Minister also extended his advice to teachers and parents, urging them to help students focus on holistic development and not just academics. He appealed to parents to avoid comparing their children with others and to instead focus on nurturing the unique talents and skills that every child possesses. He encouraged students to set realistic goals, reward themselves for their achievements, and keep striving for self-improvement.

When the participants asked about his personal motivation, PM Modi fondly declared, “You all are my motivators,” emphasizing that inspiration can be found everywhere—whether in nature, personal experiences, or through the achievements of others.

The Prime Minister also reflected on the ongoing challenge of climate change, responding to a question raised by a student. He discussed Mission LiFE, encouraging students to engage in eco-friendly initiatives. PM Modi urged students to participate in the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign, explaining that we have two mothers: the one who gives us birth and Mother Nature, who sustains us. He encouraged students to take an active role in preserving nature, emphasizing the connection between personal responsibility and environmental care.

The session concluded with PM Modi’s playful comment, urging students not to act bossy at home just because they now have a direct connection with the Prime Minister.
