Guru Nanak Birthday or Gurpurab, one of the most important festivals of the Sikh community has arrived and there is a feeling of auspiciousness, positivity amongst the people to mark the occasion and seek blessings of their god. Gurpurab or Guru Nanak Gurpurab is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Sikh communities first Guru Nanak Ji. The festival which is one of the sacred amongst all in the Sikh community and is celebrated for almost 3 days is that time of the year when followers of this religion tend to be most auspicious, go to Gurdwaras to indulge in their religious practices and pray to god for happy and prosperous lives.
People organize Prabhat Phery (Prabhat Ferries) — a tradition which literally means ‘early morning rounds’ in the neighbourhood or nearby colonies by singing religious songs, chanting Gods names, in the early morning hours before the sunrise — to create a happy, beautiful and positive environment. Prabhat Phery can be attended by people of other religion also as there is no bar or dictate that only one particular community will attend and enjoy the aura of auspicious traditional ritual. To mark the occasion, community people decorate Gurdwaras, streets, homes with fairy lights, create creative art from fairy lights, organise Langars (community free meal which is done voluntarily as a social service in Gurdwaras) and is a symbol of communities humble approach towards society to promote harmony, love and happiness around.
