Christmas celebrates Christ’s coming

opinionChristmas celebrates Christ’s coming

Sabrina radiates with the joy of her newfound faith in Jesus Christ. This joy gives her the spontaneity to witness about her freedom, security and new life in Christ at the drop of a hat. Sabrina knows that she can enjoy all these blessings because of God’ great love for the world. As an act of love, God chose to be born as a baby in Bethlehem of the blessed virgin Mary. He came to reconcile us with God our heavenly Father and with one another.

Have you ever wondered why God, the creator of the whole universe was born in a manger? The Bible says, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich” (2 Cor. 8:9). Such a beautiful description of God’s love! How can we honour this sacrificial act of God to the celebration of His birth? Let’s start by evaluating our lifestyle. Are we giving regularly to those in need? Are we aware of the needs of those around us? The coming of Christ challenges us to give joyfully and sacrificially. While Sabrina understands the when, where, how and why of Jesus’ birth, she is overwhelmed by all the frills and symbols of Christmas celebrations. She loves the music, lights, and family gatherings. She embraces the story of Jesus, the shepherds, the wise men, and the messages of generosity, love, joy, and peace. Sabrina also feels frustrated by how hectic and commercialized the season has become, and is clearly concerned that all of the cultural trappings can overwhelm the spiritual aspects of Christmas.

Over the years, as Christianity has taken root all over the world, it has adapted to different cultural and geographical settings. Some examples include the legendary story of Saint Nicholas to the jolly gift giver Santa Claus. While celebrating Christmas, let’s give due honour and worship to Jesus our Saviour and Lord this holiday season. Merry Christmas!
