New book traces security environment

On the golden jubilee of the All India DGPs and IGPs conference, the Ministry of Home Affairs has released a book titled Golden Jubilee DGsP/IGsP Conference: Since 1950 (2015). The conference was held from 18-20 December 2015 at Dhordo in Gujarat’s Rann of Kutch.

Dineshwar Sharma, Director, Intelligence Bureau, wrote in the book that the inspiration of the coffee table book came from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The book is a comprehensive account of the significant events, developments, social changes and economic factors that have shaped the security environment of the country. It gives an overview of 49 conferences, right from the first one in 1950. It details the events and minutes of the conferences and discusses how the security scenario in the country has changed over the years.

The book, which is illustrated with photographs and newspaper clippings from across the conferences, also talks of the changing nature of crimes in India and how international crimes have taken precedence over petty crimes that were a common occurrence in the early days. The book goes on to show how the intelligence agencies and the police together developed over the years to adapt to the new model and technology of policing.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh wrote on the preface of the book, “It is my privilege to be associated with the Golden Jubilee of the post-Independence DGPs/IGPs conferences. I hope this coffee table book would be interesting reading given that it contains the problems that police officers faced at different point of time after Independence and solutions that emerged on various national security and social challenges.”

Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Home Minister attended the conference and presented “police medals” to outstanding officers of the force. The Prime Minister was also given a presentation on effective and better policing models.

Delhi was the venue of the conference until 2013. 2014 onwards the conference was shifted out of the national capital. It was held in Guwahati in 2014.
