Yamuna recedes, but no end to Delhiites’ woes

New Delhi

The Yamuna floodwater slowly receded from the roads on Saturday. However, traffic regulations are still in effect on some key road stretches. Though the level of water is receding, the problems of residents are still the same. The Sunday Guardian talked to a few residents who have been shifted to the relief camps of Mori Gate and Mayur Vihar. Ajit, a resident of ghat no. 24 of Yamuna ghat bazaar, said that he has been rescued from the Yamuna ghat bazaar area and shifted to the rescue camp of the Mori Gate School. He said that about 15 families are still stuck in the Ghat area. He added that they have taken shelter on the terraces of their houses.

Simran, another resident of Yamuna Bazaar, said they had been rescued by the NDRF, but she lost her pet in the flood. She added that because of this flood, her house on the ground floor was fully merged in flood waters. She had lost everything, she said. Ramesh said that his whole family has been rescued by the NDRF, and he shifted his family to his friend’s house and came back to evacuate his belongings from the house, but he couldn’t succeed in doing so as the NDRF only rescued the individuals, not his belongings, so he stayed there to keep a watch on his belongings. On the other hand, residents of Mayur Vihar Phase 1, who have been rescued and shifted to the tents, said are suffering a lot as they are going through several problems. Ankit, a resident of Mayur Vihar Phase 1, said that the government has only set up three toilets for more than 500 people. Women and children are all using the same toilets and this can lead to health issues. There is a lack of cleanliness and there is not enough proper food to eat.
Another resident said that the area has poor facilities for food, water, toilets, etc. Atul Kanwar, D.G., NDRF, said: “Our men are working around the clock and have rescued everyone from the low-lying areas.” He added: “Currently, 17 of our teams are deployed in the city, and if CM asks, we would deploy more teams.”
