Ram Mandir, Art 370 to be dropped from BJP’s poll promises

BJP think-tank may reassert its commitment towards UCC implementation in ‘Sankalp Patra’.

Amid on-going brain-storming sessions for preparing a BJP manifesto for Lok Sabha elections, there are indications that “Sankalp Patra” will likely have a theme revolving around nationalism, “Modi ki guarantee” and party’s Viksit Bharat pledge.

Apart from a stress on schemes for the poor, youth, women and farmers, the BJP think-tank may also like to reassert the party’s commitment towards UCC implementation in the all-important document.

The poor, youth, women and farmers have been described by PM Narendra Modi as the real castes for whose upliftment his government wants to work and the party’s manifesto being prepared for the Lok Sabha elections is likely to include a vision document for these four castes’ welfare, said sources.

Along with this, the BJP’s “Sankalp Patra” may also include a  special reference to policies and schemes of the Modi government that have brought about a change in the lives of these sections of society.

Election promises for employment and self-employment of youth and women are also likely to be included in the manifesto, said a party leader.

The “Sankalp Patra” will likely reflect new as well as fulfilled promises  – including Ram Mandir construction and Article 370’s abrogation – during the past 10 years and the way ahead for making India a developed country by 2047.

“For the first time since 1980, the manifesto will not have two promises – Ram Mandir construction and abrogation of Article 370 ,” said a leader, adding that apart from the 1999 party manifesto these issues have always been a part of its election promises.

Several meetings of the 27-member BJP Manifesto Committee, headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, have already been held where public suggestions and ideas of Union ministers and CMs of BJP-ruled states have been discussed, said a party leader.

The BJP has received around 3.75 lakh suggestions via its missed call campaign and approximately 1.70 lakh suggestions through the NaMo app for its “Sankalp Patra”.

The theme of developed India by 2047 is being viewed as an issue that strikes a chord with young voters. Sources said the “Sankalp Patra” would highlight how the Indian economy, which is the fifth largest in the world at present, is on its way to become the third largest economy and a developed nation. In addition to this, “Modi ki guarantee” is likely to find a prime mention in the manifesto and the party plans to enlist the promises fulfilled by the Modi government.

Sources said the BJP plans to reach out to voters who support Hindutva and nationalism by promising the implementation of UCC and NRC during the third term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Under this section of the “Sankalp Patra”, the party may highlight the issues related to Ram Temple’s construction, abrogation of Article 370, making Triple Talaq punishable and CAA.

UCC has been a part of the manifesto of Jana Sangh/BJP since 1967.
